Kandaen gets clean U, releases on April 14

Kandaen stars Shanthnoo and Reshma in the lead roles, directed by A.C. Mugil, who has earlier assisted Prabhu Deva for Pokkiri and Ich. The film received clean U by the Regional Censor Board very recently.

The latest buzz in tinsel town is that apart from Reshma there is another debut heroine Nimmi, who is playing a vital role in the film. Kandaen is an out and out family entertainer and the filmmakers are very confident that it will appeal all sections of audiences. The music is given by Vijay Ebenezer, an associate of Harris Jayaraj. All the seven tunes in the album are completely different and it’s a very cool and classy album. Veteran actor Vijay Kumar is playing the role of Shanthnoo’s grand father in the film and the scenes between them are quite interesting.

Kandaen is all set to hit the big screens on April 14th, 2011.

Adding more he said “Rajinikanth, Shankar, Sun Pictures, myself and music composer AR Rahman will remain for the sequel too. Apart from us most of the crew members of Endhiran too will remain for the sequel. Director Shankar is busy preparing the script”.

So who is the lucky lady to pair opposite Rajini in Endhiran-2? Is it Aishwarya again or any Bollywood beauty?

Large quake hits Myanmar near northern Thailand

CHIANG MAI, Thailand (Reuters) – A large 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar near the border with northern Thailand on Thursday, killing one woman, police and witnesses said.

Witnesses said the tremors were felt in Bangkok, central Myanmar and as far away as the Vietnam capital of Hanoi where people were evacuated from tall buildings.

Police said a 53-year-old woman in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai province, had been killed when one wall of her house collapsed. Hospital officials said there were no other deaths or injuries reported.

The quake was centered 111 km (69 miles) north of the town of Chiang Rai, Thailand's northernmost province.

"In my 40 years, I never felt an earthquake this strong. A glass broke and I had to hold on to a pillar," Thanawan Sisukniyom, a retired teacher in Mai Sai, told Reuters by telephone.

Witnesses in Chiang Mai, the country's second-largest city, reported no immediate damage, but said the earthquake was felt strongly.

A witness in the Myanmar town of Tachilek, which borders Chiang Rai, said parked motorcycles fell to the ground and cracks were seen in the road.

TPBS television said electricity was cut off in parts of Mae Sai. The earthquake was shallow at a depth of 6.2 miles.

Chiang Rai province is a sparsely populated, hilly area that forms part of the famous "Golden Triangle," known for growth of illicit opium and where Myanmar, Laos and Thailand meet.

Somchai Baimuang, deputy director of the Thai meteorological department, urged the public not to panic.
"It's too soon to tell if there is any damage," he told Reuters. "Aftershocks are possible in the next two days."
Residents left their homes in the Myanmar capital Naypyitaw and the biggest city, Yangon. No deaths or injuries were reported.

"Many people fled their homes and laid down on the ground outside away from the buildings. We are still sitting on the ground since there are several aftershocks," a resident in Kentung, 50 miles west of the epicenter, told Reuters by telephone.

"In some buildings, TV sets fell off the tables and shrine altars fell down. I don't know anything about the casualties but I think there will be a lot of damage to properties," he added.

Hollywood icon Dame Elizabeth Taylor has died at the age of 79

Hollywood icon Dame Elizabeth Taylor has died at the age of 79.

The actress, who was suffering from congestive heart failure, passed away at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in the early hours of Wednesday morning with her children by her side. Taylor's death comes six weeks after she was hospitalised because of her ill health.

Her son Michael Wilding confirmed the sad news and paid tribute to his late mother in a statement, which reads, "My mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humour, and love. Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world."

A statement from Taylor's representative reads, "Legendary actress, businesswoman, and fearless activist Elizabeth Taylor died peacefully today in Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. She was surrounded by her children... The actress had been hospitalised six weeks ago with congestive heart failure, a condition with which she had struggled for some years. Though she had recently suffered a number of complications, her condition had stabilised and it was hoped that she would be able to return home. Sadly, this was not to be."

A private funeral will be held later this week (beg21Mar11) and the family has asked for donations to be made to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. Plans for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Born in Hampstead, north London on 27 February 1932, Taylor was the second child to Francis Lenn Taylor and Sara Viola Warmbrodt, who were Americans residing in England.

She appeared in her first motion picture at the age of nine for Universal Studios before later signing with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and starring in 1943's Lassie Come Home, but it was her role in 1944's National Velvet that skyrocketed her to stardom at the tender age of 12.

Taylor went on to carve out a hugely successful Hollywood career, with her most famous roles including turns in Cleopatra and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. She picked up a long list of accolades for her performances over the years including two Academy Awards for Best Actress, for Butterfield 8 (1960) and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), and four Golden Globes, while she was declared a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1999.

But despite her stellar success, Taylor was arguably more famous for her eight marriages.

Her first marriage to Conrad Hilton ended after just eight months in 1951. A year later she married Michael Wilding and the couple went on to have two sons. They divorced in 1957 and just days later she wed theatre producer Michael Todd - the father of her daughter Liza - but he died in 1958 when his private jet, named Lucky Liz, crashed in New Mexico.

Fourteen months after Todd's death, Taylor married his best friend, actor Eddie Fisher and they went on to star together in her Oscar-winning movie Butterfield 8. The union came to an end in 1964 and just nine days after her divorce from Fisher was finalised, Taylor married Richard Burton for the first time.

They met while shooting 1963 epic Cleopatra in Italy and their onscreen romance quickly turned into an offscreen love affair.

Taylor's marriage to Burton crumbled and the couple divorced in 1974 after 10 years together, but they remarried in a secret ceremony in Africa 16 months later.

The actress admitted she had remarried Burton after an x-ray revealed spots on her lungs which she feared were cancerous. She said the anxious 12 hours of waiting for the prognosis, which turned out to be clear, convinced her to remarry her lover.

They divorced for a second time in 1976 and Taylor went on to wed John Warner later that year and Larry Fortensky in 1991. Both marriages ended in divorce.

Taylor is survived by four children: Michael Wilding, Christopher Wilding and Liza Todd and adoptive daughter Maria Burton.

Malaysia's Anwar denies sex tape allegations

KUALA LUMPUR, March 21- Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who is on currently trial for sodomy, on Monday denied allegations he was the man in a sex tape shown to the media.
Anwar, a former deputy premier who was sacked and jailed in 1998 on separate sodomy and corruption charges widely seen as politically motivated, said the tape was another "dirty and obscene" attempt to end this career.

"I condemn this latest conspiracy to slander and embarrass my family and I," he said after an unidentified group showed the tape to journalists including the editors of several Malaysian newspapers.

"The visual that was shown... this afternoon is a planned evil attack by my political enemies in their effort to slow down Pakatan Rakyat," he said, referring to his three-member opposition alliance.

Anwar said he was at home meeting with political staffers when the incident -- purportedly an assignation with a female prostitute in a hotel room -- supposedly took place in February.

"I even have proof that I was sending tweets at the time the alleged incident was said to have occurred," he said. "They have tried for 13 years to destroy me. Our members and the Malaysian public will not be duped to believe such scurrilous attacks."

According to online news portal journalist Sam Tan, who was allowed to view the 17-minute tape, it showed someone looking like the former deputy premier engaging in sex with a woman in what appeared to be a hotel room.

"The people involved showed us the video on a laptop and it appeared to be from a CCTV that showed someone who looks like Anwar having sex with a woman," he said.

"The reporters were made to leave their cameras and all recording devices outside the room before we were made to dress in robes and led to the computer where the video was played for us," he added.

Anwar said he was unable to take legal action against those releasing the tape as he had yet to see a copy, and it was not yet clear whether it would be widely distributed.

The unidentified group said in a statement that the incident took place at a hotel "that offered sex services and spa facilities" in the Malaysian capital on February 21 this year.

They said the video and hidden recording equipment were found in the hotel room after Anwar asked for it to be searched to find a watch left behind there.

"Anwar is not a pious person with high moral value and integrity as portrayed, and therefore he is not fit to be a leader," they said in the statement signed only "The Insider".

The group said it would send a copy of the video to Anwar and his wife next week and that if he did not resign, they would ask civil society groups to establish a panel to investigate their claims.

The allegations emerged as Malaysian prosecutors attempt to force Anwar to provide a DNA sample in his sodomy trial, as they try to prove he had sexual contact with his accuser, a 25-year-old male former aide.
He has refused to give a sample and won a key victory earlier this month when DNA evidence obtained from his detention cell without his consent was ruled inadmissible.

Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan has accused Anwar -- a 63-year-old father of six -- of sodomising him at an upmarket Kuala Lumpur condominium in 2008. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

Anwar has said he is the victim of a plot to prevent him from taking power after the opposition made huge strides in 2008 elections, stunning the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition which has been in power for half a century.

He was sacked as deputy premier by then prime minister Mahathir Mohamad in 1998 and found guilty of corruption and sodomy, but was released from jail in 2004 after the sodomy conviction was overturned.

Kushboo has warned Vijay

Kushboo has warned Vijay that politics is not as easy as cinema. The actress, who recently joined the ruling party DMK, has advised the star that entering politics is not recommended as fans are different from voters and not to miscalculate that all his fans would vote for him.

This warning comes as a surprise because Vijay has not entered the political fray directly till date and there is just a speculation that he would either campaign for the AIADMK or offer support from the outside through his fans.

Kushboo went on to add that acting in movies is much easier than the work one has to do as a politician.
