The love affair of film director Cheran's daughter reached the portals of the Madras high court on Monday, with her boyfriend's mother Eswari Ammal of Choolaimedu filing a habeas corpus petition.
After the girl, Dhamini, made it clear that she wanted to go with her boyfriend, Chandru, the judges revealed their intention to send the girl with the boy's family. At this juncture, Cheran and his wife pleaded to be heard by the bench. The judges obliged. After conferring with them, their counsel NR Elango and the counsel for Eswari Ammal, R Sankarasubbu; the judges called up senior member of the Bar, NGR Prasad, who happened to be in the court.
Prasad told the judges that he was ready to keep the girl under his care till Tuesday, and the judges decided to entrust the girl with him. On Tuesday afternoon, the bench will again hear the issue and might pass the final orders on the matter.
In her petition, Eswari Ammal submitted that her son fell in love with Dhamini, 20, on June 4, 2011 after witnessing her dance programme. When informed, Cheran had initially agreed for the marriage but later said the couple should wait for a couple of years.
The petitioner said Cheran had tried to intimidate Chandru and separate the two. Eswari Ammal said Dhamini came to their home on August 2 but was taken away by Cheran and his friends.
Dhamini's case hit the headlines after she approached the city police, stating that her father had been intimidating her and her boyfriend. After Cheran and his family members contested the claim and lodged counter-complaints, the girl was sent to a government home by the city police on Sunday.
